If you bought this item at The Home Depot, you’d be happy to know that the Home Depot Return Policy process is easy. You don’t have to go through the hassle of explaining if you don’t like the product or don’t need it anymore.
What Is Home Depot Return Policy?
The Home Depot accepts returns of most new, unused items within 90 days after purchase, with some exceptions listed in our Return Policy Exceptions. The Few and Far Between Exceptions to the Return Policy.
For purchases made on a The Home Depot Consumer Credit Card, The Home Depot Commercial Revolving Charge, or a The Home Depot Commercial Account, you have 365 days from the date of purchase to return the item for a full refund, unless one of the exceptions listed in our return policy applies.
The Home Depot may, at its discretion, offer an exchange, a cash refund, an account credit, or a refund in the form of store credit (“Store Credit”) upon receipt of a valid proof of purchase for a returned item.
Unless otherwise specified in the Return Policy Exceptions, refunds will be made using the same payment method as the original purchase. A Store Credit would be issued in the amount of a returned product if the initial payment was made using a gift card or Store Credit.
Perhaps we might find your lost receipt in our archives. If it’s been less than 30 days since your purchase, you can probably look up your ticket in our system.
Within 365 days following a purchase, you can look up a receipt in our system if you used The Home Depot Consumer Credit Card, The Home Depot Commercial Revolving Charge, or The Home Depot Commercial Account.
If the return results from an error on The Home Depot’s part, the original shipping costs will be repaid in full. The rule has some caveats (including Express Delivery and Major Appliance). All claims must be included in return for a refund to be processed.
The Home Depot will gladly supply you with a written copy of their return policy if you ask for one.

Home Depot Return Policy Exceptions
Unless the item was purchased with The Home Depot Consumer Credit Card, you have 365 days from the date of purchase to request a refund (in which case the refund will be granted as a store credit if the transaction was made more than 180 days ago).

The following items may only be returned within 30 days of purchase:

90-Day Home Depot Return Policy
You have 90 days from the date of purchase to return anything you bought at the Home Depot Design Center using any form of payment (including The Home Depot Consumer Credit Card, The Home Depot Commercial Revolving Charge, or The Home Depot Commercial Account).
Home Depot Return Policy on Major Appliances
Defective or damaged Major Appliances:
Major appliances (such as refrigerators, freezers, washers, dryers, stoves, ovens, dishwashers, and microwaves) should be inspected for flaws or damage before a consumer accepts delivery or takes an older home from the store.
If the product arrives damaged, the consumer should inform the delivery person so that they can make alternate arrangements or refuse the delivery. Within 48 hours after delivery acceptance or the time of pick-up at the Service Desk, customers can return products to The Home Depot if they discover flaws or damage. This can be done by calling (800) 455-3869.
Any orders not accepted by the customer within 30 days of the unit(s) arriving at the delivery facility will be canceled, and the teams will be returned.
Home Depot Return Policy on Hazardous Materials
Items that contain flammable liquids or gases cannot be returned via mail, regardless of whether or not they have been drained. Lawnmowers, leaf blowers, and anything else that runs on combustible fuel fall into this category.
Products containing flammable liquids/gases or other potentially dangerous items should be returned to your neighborhood Home Depot.
Home Depot Return Policy on Plants
Our one-year guarantee covers all perennials, trees, and shrubs. If any of the live items you ordered online (such as houseplants, perennials, trees, holiday trees, wreaths, and garlands) arrive dead or damaged, please call Customer Support at 1-800-430-3376 within three days of delivery, and we will send you a replacement at no additional cost. Fresh flowers, such as bouquets, are excluded from this regulation.

Blinds: Unless the blinds are specifically labeled as “Guaranteed to Fit,” they cannot be returned for a refund or exchange. Every home is allowed a maximum of four blinds. All items being exchanged must be of the same type and hue. You may be responsible for paying the difference if there is a price difference between your old and your new blinds. Home Depot In-Store Return Policy Exceptions
- If you paid for an item with a gift card or Store Credit, you’d get a Store Credit as a refund. Store Credit may require registration. To register, you must present a driver’s licence or other government-issued picture identification.
- You will receive store credit for the lowest price offered without a verified sales receipt.
- Home Depot will provide a refund check for any cash or cash equivalent purchases over $1,000.
- Returns or cancellations of Special Orders are only accepted at the original point of purchase and may incur a 15% restocking fee.
Merchandise Ordered from Third-Party, Marketplace Sellers Exceptions
Only products purchased from The Home Depot are covered by Home Depot’s return policy (in-store or online at homedepot.com). All returns for items purchased from a third party or marketplace seller through The Home Depot’s shipping service must be made directly to the original seller.
Home Depot Return on Paint
If, within 30 days of purchase, you are dissatisfied with your interior or exterior liquid paint, return the unused portion and your receipt for a full refund. We’ll make things right by either fixing your color or replacing it with a similar-sized can.
The warranty does not cover the following:
- Problems caused by the poor application or surface preparation, liquid stains, color samples Out-of-production (OOP) items
- Special orders
- Non-stock items, third-party or marketplace sales, or labor or installation
- If we suspect fraud or abuse, we retain the right to place restrictions on the guarantee.
