Amazon.com Returns Policy – Before making a purchase, it’s essential to read the seller’s Returns and Refunds Policy. In the long run, this could save you a lot of time and money.

It’s also important to know that it can take up to 25 days for the product to get to the fulfillment center, another two to three business days for the refund to be processed, and then another three to five business days for the money to show up in your account.

In this article, we explain everything that wasn’t clear before. Read on to find out everything you need to know about how Amazon handles returns.

Items that Can’t be Returned

For information about products that can’t be returned, see Items that Can’t be Returned.

Some things can’t be sent back to Amazon.com or can only be sent back to a third-party seller.

Amazon.com doesn’t accept returns of the following items:

  • Computer laptops, desktops, and Kindles more than 30 days after delivery
  • Items classified as hazardous materials or that use flammable liquids or gases (contact the manufacturer directly for service, warranty, return, and refund information)
  • Any product missing the serial number or UPC
  • Downloadable software products
  • Online subscriptions after they have been accessed
  • Gift cards (except as required by law)
  • Prepaid game cards (World of Warcraft, Xbox 360 Live, Wii Points, etc.)
  • Some jewelry orders
  • Some health and personal care orders
  • Grocery products
  • Open software
  • Items with special shipping restrictions
  • Live insects

Note:

  • Items sold by third-party sellers can’t be sent back to Amazon.com. The seller sets the return policy. In Your Orders, you can see details about each item.
  • When you click Return or Replace Item in Your Orders, you’ll see a message telling you if the item you bought from Amazon.com can be returned. If Amazon’s return policy says that you can’t return the item, you won’t see any message.
  • If an item you can’t return got to you damaged or broken, you can ask for a refund or a replacement in “Your Orders.” You can contact us if you can’t get a refund or replacement.

Returns to Third-Party Sellers

When you order from a seller that ships and fulfills its orders, also known as a “third-party seller,” your return goes to the seller, not to Amazon.com.

Third-party sellers follow the policies for returns and refunds on Amazon.com. These policies are explained in About Our Returns Policies.

Third-party sellers must either give a U.S. return address, a prepaid return label, or a full refund without asking for the item to be sent back. If a seller doesn’t offer these ways to return your items, you can file an A-to-Z Guarantee claim to get help with your return.

If you’re sending the item within the U.S. and the order is worth $100 or more, you should insure the package for the value of the goods and use a shipping service that requires a signature. Items worth more than $35 must be sent back to the seller with a shipping service that can be tracked.

We recommend the USPS delivery confirmation service for items that cost less than $35. If you don’t use a way to return that can be tracked or if you refuse the shipment as a way to return, we may not be able to cover you under the A-to-z Guarantee.

Amazon Global Store Returns

When you send something back to us, it can take up to 25 days to get here. Once the item arrives at our fulfillment center, it takes two business days to process the refund and another 3–5 business days for the amount to show up in your account.

For most Amazon Global Store returns, you’ll get a UPS return label already paid for. This lets you drop off the item(s) at any UPS drop-off point in the US. Use this link to find the UPS location that is most convenient for you:

Not all items in the Global Store can be sent back for free. In this case, you will have to pay to send the item back. We suggest you send the item(s) back in a way that can be tracked through the carrier of your choice.

When Amazon gets the item back, it will automatically pay back up to $20 for the return postage costs. If the cost of your return postage is more than $20, you can call our Customer Service Center and ask for a refund of the extra cost.

If you send back a broken, wrong, or defective item, you’ll get your Import Fees Deposit back as well as the total cost of shipping.

Amazon Refunds

When you return an item, your refund amount and refund method may vary. Check the payment method refunded and the status of your refund in Your Orders.

When you return an item, the amount and way you get your money back may differ. In Your Orders, you can see how your money was refunded and how far along it is.

Note: All of the information on this page only applies to things bought from Amazon or items that Amazon ships. Don’t send items back to Amazon that you bought from a seller on Amazon Marketplace, and that seller shipped to you.

How Long Do Refunds Take?

In the Online Returns Center, you can choose how you want your money back when you send something back.

After the delivery person gets your item, it can take up to two weeks for us to get your return and start working on it. For some things, it may take up to 30 days. We usually process returns within 3–5 business days after the carrier delivers the item to our Returns Center.

Instant Refunds

If the Instant Refund option is available, you can choose if you want to use your refund immediately instead of waiting for us to process your return. Your credit card or Amazon.com Gift Card balance is used to give you an instant refund. You’ll still have 30 days to return your items.

Refund Times

Once we send you your refund, it will take your bank some more time to put the money in your account. See the table below for more information.

Note: Even if you don’t have a physical pre-paid credit card, we still have it in your account. You can use the card to buy things in the future. For orders that use the Amazon Currency Converter, we give a refund in your local currency at the same rate as the original order.

Gift Returns

How the gift was bought and how the gift is returned affects what kind of refund or credit the gift recipient gets. Go to Return a Gift to find out more.

Amazon may decide that a gift recipient can get a refund without sending the item back. If a gift return is eligible for a refund without sending the item back, the person who got the gift is told in the Returns Center or by calling Customer Service. Go to Conditions of Use to find out more.

    *You have 30 days after delivery to return most things. Go to Your Orders and click on Return or Replace Items. This will take you to a page where you can see how long you have to send an item back.
     
    Note: If you live in CT, MD, NV, PA, VA, WV, or WI, you may have to pay tax on restocking fees when you return items that Amazon.com shipped and sold. There may be more rules that apply to some products. Go to About Our Returns Policies to find out more.

    Mistaken Returns

    When you send something back, include the right thing and all of it. To get your money back, you must return the correct item.

    Amazon doesn’t keep items that were sent to us by mistake. Instead, when it makes sense and is possible, it donates or recycles them. If you accidentally sent the wrong thing to Amazon, please contact Customer Service as soon as possible.

    Amazon can’t promise that your item will be found and returned, and they won’t pay you anything if you send them the wrong item.

    Amazon Alexa Voice Shopping

    Alexa purchases that aren’t digital can be returned for free, but purchases from Amazon Pharmacy must follow Amazon Pharmacy’s return policy. Use the Returns Center as you usually would return something you bought with Alexa.

    We’ll automatically give back any shipping costs you paid to send the item back. The shipping refund should appear in your account seven days after the product refund.

    Amazon Devices

    Kindle e-readers, Fire tablets, Amazon Fire TV devices, Echo devices, and the Amazon-branded accessories that come with them can be returned to Amazon.com within 30 days of receiving the shipment as long as they are in the same condition as when they were bought.

    All Amazon-branded devices and accessories returned and given a refund or replacement become Amazon’s property as soon as they are received.

    Amazon Fresh and Grocery Items

    Grocery items, including those from Amazon Fresh and wine, can’t be sent back to Amazon, but you can get a refund or a new one.

    Amazon Handmade

    Amazon’s standard A-to-z Guarantee rules apply to products sold by Handmade Makers. The only exception is when you buy something that can be changed in ways other than size and color. For more information, see Customized Products.

    Amazon Photos

    Amazon Photos printed products are not returnable to Amazon but may be refunded or replaced.

    Amazon Pharmacy

    We’re unable to accept returns. This includes a 6-month supply of medicine in case your doctor changes your prescription, and you have to switch medicines. If you notice any problems with the quality of your order, like mistakes or signs of tampering, please call Amazon Pharmacy Customer Care right away at 1-855-745-5725.

    Amazon Renewed

    The Amazon Renewed Guarantee backs up products on Amazon Renewed, where it says so on the product page. With this guarantee, you can get a replacement or your money back if you are not happy with the product within 90 days (or one year for a Renewed Premium product).

    Amazon Refurbished items can be returned for free within 90 days (or one year for Refurbished Premium items) of receiving the shipment or within one year for Refurbished Premium items.

    Amazon Warehouse

    Most of the time, you can return used or open-box items that you bought from Amazon Warehouse and shipped from Amazon.com within 30 days of receiving your shipment. There are different rules or requirements for some products.

    Amazon Refurbished items sold by Amazon Warehouse can be sent back up to 90 days after they arrive.

    Automotive Items

    If you bought a broken car part from Amazon.com that came from Amazon.com and was covered by a published manufacturer warranty, Amazon would honor the warranty. For as long as the warranty says, Amazon will either replace the item or give you the money back.

    Baby Items

    You can return baby items within 90 days of getting them.
    Gifts bought from a Baby Registry can be sent back within a year of when they were shipped.

    Breast pumps must be returned unused, in their original condition, with the factory seal and packaging still in place.

    If your return isn’t because of an error on Amazon’s part, we won’t give you back the original shipping costs.

    Birthday Gift List

    Gifts bought from your Amazon Birthday Gift List can be returned up to 90 days after delivery.

    Items bought by the person in charge of the registry can be returned to Amazon.com within 30 days.

    Clothing and Accessories

    Clothing and accessories can be returned up to 30 days after delivery.

    Items from The Drop Collections can be returned, but a return shipping fee will be taken out of your refund because the item is made just for you.

    Collectibles (sports & entertainment)

    It would help if you used a way that can be tracked to return collectibles worth $35 or more. Things worth more than $500 also need to be insured.

    The item must be returned with all its packaging (boxes, manuals, warranty cards, etc.) and certificates of authenticity, grading, and appraisal.

    Any item that is returned without the original paperwork will be turned down.

    Collectible Coins

    • Contact the third-party seller within 14 days of receiving the item to find out how to return it. Your return must have a postmark within 30 days from when you got the item.
    • Items worth $35 or more must be sent back using a shipping method that can be tracked.
    • Before you send back an item, take a picture of it for your records.
      Please return graded coins and government-issued coins in their original holders and with any accompanying materials.
    • Returns without the original box and paperwork will be turned down.
    • Collectible Coins that have been broken or changed in some other way after being sent back will not be accepted.

    Computers and Electronics

    • Within 30 days of purchase, you can get a full refund for any new desktop, laptop, or tablet (except for Kindle E-readers and Fires) that didn’t work, was damaged when it arrived, or is still in the box.
    • Amazon.com may test computers that were sent back because they didn’t work when they got there. If the customer lied about the product’s condition, the customer would have to pay a fee equal to 15% of the product’s sales price.
    • If a customer returns a desktop, laptop, or tablet that is broken, missing parts, or can’t be sold because the customer messed with it, the customer may have to pay a higher restocking fee based on the item’s condition.
    • Products bought from Marketplace vendors, whether new, used, or refurbished, are subject to the return policy of each vendor.
    • Note: Before giving back laptops, cameras, or other electronic devices on which you’ve saved personal information, you should delete all of this information.

    Custom Gift List

    Items bought as gifts from your Amazon Custom Gift List can be returned up to 90 days after they were sent.

    Items bought by the person in charge of the registry can be returned within 30 days.

    Customized Products

    Products configured, personalized, or written on are examples of customized products. These include engravings, stamps, monograms, embroidery, embossing, etching, carving, or printing.

    The A-to-Z Guarantee covers products made to order and sold by third-party sellers. Please note the following if you want to file a claim for these items:

    Notify the third-party seller of the return within 14 days of getting the item.

    Because these products can be set up, written on, or designed in a way that is unique to the buyer, the third-party seller does not have to accept returns or exchanges unless the products are damaged/defective when they arrive or are significantly different from what was ordered.

    The Amazon A-to-Z Guarantee protects you if a third-party seller misspells something or makes a mistake in the configuration, inscription, or design.

    All product packaging, like boxes, must be returned with the item and, if necessary, certificates of authenticity, grading, and appraisal. Products that don’t have all of their correct tags can’t be returned.

    Digital Products

    Unless otherwise stated, you can’t return games, software downloads, or items bought from the Amazon Appstore, Amazon Digital Music Store, Amazon Luna store, or Amazon Video store.

    You can send it back within seven days of buying a book from the Kindle Store. After a refund is given, you can no longer read the book. Visit Manage Your Content and Devices, click the Actions button next to the title you want to return, and then click Return for Refund.

    Before you accept a Kindle book gift, you can exchange it for an Amazon.com Gift Card.

    Magazine, newspaper, and blog subscriptions in the Newsstand section of the Kindle Store can be canceled anytime by going to Manage Your Content and Devices. See the Kindle Magazines and Newspapers page for more information.

    Digital educational resources that haven’t been downloaded can be returned within seven days of purchase.

    Depending on the details of your order, you may be able to get a refund on Amazon-Sold Add-Ons you bought from Amazon Luna within 90 days. To get help with a refund request, contact Amazon’s customer service.

    Songs or albums bought by accident from our Digital Music Store with Alexa can be returned and refunded if we get your request within seven days of the purchase date. Contact customer service to ask for a refund.

    Fine Art

    • Acceptable art items worth $35 or more must be sent back in a way that can be tracked. Things worth more than $500 also need to be insured.
    • The item must be returned with all its packaging (boxes, etc.) and certificates of authenticity and value.
    • Any Fine Art item returned without the original paperwork will be turned down.
    • Acceptable art items damaged or changed after being sent back won’t be accepted.
    • Before you send back a Fine Art item, could you take a picture of it for your records?

    Furniture

    • You can send back furniture for any reason within 30 days of getting it.
    • Amazon will help you fix the problem or give you a free return or replacement if the item is broken or doesn’t work.
    • Contact the manufacturer directly for information about product registration and warranties.

    Gift Cards

    • Gift cards can’t be returned after they’ve been bought (except as required by law).

    Hazardous Materials

    Amazon doesn’t take back dangerous items that can catch fire, like liquids or gases.

    Get the manufacturer’s service, warranty, return, and refund information.

    Jewelry and Watches

    • Items with a value of $35 or more that are being returned must be sent in a way that can be tracked.
    • The item must be returned with all its packaging (boxes, manuals, warranty cards, etc.) and certificates of authenticity, grading, and appraisal.
    • Any item that is returned without the original paperwork will be turned down.
      Items that have been resized, damaged, or changed in any other way after delivery can’t be returned.

    Live Plants or Insects

    You can’t return fresh flowers, live indoor plants, or insects to Amazon, but you may be able to get your money back.

    Luxury Stores

    The following rules apply to all items that can be returned to Luxury Stores. Returns that don’t follow these rules may be rejected. Amazon won’t take back beauty products made with dangerous materials, like liquids or gases that can catch fire. There won’t be a “free returns” message on the product detail page for these items.

    Luxury store products must be returned in a brand-new, unused, and unaltered state. This includes any attached tags, like product and security tags, as well as hygiene seals when used.

    The packaging and paperwork for Luxury Stores products should also be sent back. Packaging is an area in which we actively seek out name-brand options (provided by the luxury brand directly, different from the Luxury Stores’ packaging). The product documentation includes any warranties, grading, or certificates of authenticity.

    Use the return label we give you to send the item back. When a return label isn’t given, items must be sent back using a method that can be tracked, insured for the value of the goods, and sent with a service that requires a signature.

    If we have doubts about the item’s authenticity or condition, we may need more time to discuss handling the return with the brand owner. This could affect when you get your refund.

    Major Appliances

    Large appliances can be sent back within 30 days of purchase for any reason.

    At the time of delivery, take the item out of the box and ensure it is what you ordered and is not broken. Tell the delivery person and don’t take the package if the item is wrong or broken. They’ll help you get a free replacement or your money back.

    If you get the item and find it is broken or not working right, Amazon will help you fix the problem or give you a free return or replacement.

    Mattresses

    • Within 100 days of getting your shipment, you can ask for a return or refund for any reason.
    • Mattresses that haven’t been opened and are still in their original packaging can be sent back to us.
    • Mattresses that have been opened, expanded, or are full-size can’t be returned, but they can be refunded.
    • Contact the manufacturer directly for information about product registration and warranties.

    Pet Food

    • Pet food and similar products are not returnable to Amazon, but may be refundable.

    Pre-Paid Phone or Game Cards

    Prepaid phone cards and game cards like World of Warcraft, Xbox Live, Wii Points, etc., cannot be returned to Amazon.

    Software and Video Games

    Software and video games can be sent back within 30 days for a full refund. Software or video games that have been used or are missing parts can be charged a restocking fee of up to 100%.

    Televisions

    • TVs can be sent back for any reason within 30 days of when they were shipped.
    • TVs being returned must be in brand-new condition, in the original box, and have all personal information erased by factory reset.
    • If the item is broken or not working right, Amazon will let you return or replace it for free.
    • Contact the manufacturer directly for information about product registration and warranties.

    Tickets

    • Theme park tickets are not returnable after purchase.

    FAQs – Amazon Return Policy

    By 2021, Amazon changed how you could return items. Restocking fees would no longer be charged for returns made on time, in good condition, and without damage. Video games and open software are the only things that are different. Also, sellers can’t say no to a returned item unless the time for returns has passed.

    Can I return an Amazon item if I’ve opened it?

    Most of the time, you can return used or open-box items that you bought from Amazon Warehouse and shipped from Amazon.com within 30 days of receiving the shipment.

    How long do you have to return a purchase from Amazon?

    Why does Amazon not want me to return?

    Amazon could decide that a refund can be given without the item being sent back. This choice will depend mainly on how much the item costs. If the price is so low that it’s less than what it would cost to ship it back to Amazon, inspect it, and put it back on the shelf, Amazon may decide it’s not worth the trouble.
